There was a lot of great action with added sound effects throughout Malus Domestica, which sounds silly but was done in such a way that it really helped to set the tone of the book. However, I felt that the author made a spectacular recovery from that at about 70% and ended everything with a bang. This book felt a little "throw everything into it and see how it works" towards the last half and it suffered for it a bit. To me any book with supernatural or fantasy elements still has to have some base in facts or, if the facts are made up, they need to be explained in a way that makes sense. I took away some stars because the book got a little too convoluted and unbelievable towards the middle, and yes I say unbelievable even for a fantasy/horror novel. I thoroughly enjoyed Malus Domestica, from the kick ass heroine that didn't need a guy to save her to the fact that there was multiple black folks in it. Thank you so much to NetGalley and Tor Books for the opportunity to read this book.

I liked most of the characters but the one that I was most interested in, Heinrich Hammer, Robin’s mentor, didn’t appear in person until the very end of the book. Had I realised there would be so many of these references I would have made a list and asked other readers to let me know which ones I’d missed. There were plenty of pop culture references in this book, from Batman to Indiana Jones and The Simpsons. While it is well written I did spend a lot of the first half of the book anxious for some present day action scenes.
